Musical History Drama
Course Syllabus
Fall 2025- Spring 2026
Course Purpose and Description

This course provides a general overview of Modern American History from 1900-2000 through the modes of music, drama and theater.
“Sing it – You’ll never forget it.” It is remarkable how we remember songs, advertisement jingles and catchy tunes our whole lives. Because musical learning resides in a different and very resilient part of our minds, it is an ideal place to teach from.
In musical history drama we will study history in depth through the modes of music, dance, drama and multilevel interaction to create an actual “musical” in the fullest Broadway sense of the term. Singing, movement and drama creates a learning environment that incorporates the auditory, kinesthetic and visual learning styles to provide a broad spectrum of complete learning. The music is high quality that will be both emotionally and academically satisfying to learn and hear.  Students will cooperate together to create a truly wonderful program and learn history at the same time. MHD is essentially a broad overview of American History and Culture. This year's production is "DECADES... a stroll through the 20th Century." The curriculum is divided into 10 Decades from 1900 to 2000.

Expectations

Students are expected to attend classes regularly and arrive to each class on time with a notebook and pencil. There will be assignments; reading, watching videos and completing those assignments. In class, the opportunities for learning will primarily consist of lectures, learning singing dancing, acting, lectures and discussion. There will be extra rehearsal times at the end of the year and a tech week that students will participate in before the show.

This is a yearlong commitment and NOT a semester course. Students are expected to stay the course as the show is in May. The most fun comes second semester and students have the joy of performing all they have worked for.
